Florence 1919, maybe 1920. In those years, Count Camillo Negroni used to be at the aristocratic Caffè Casoni. One day he wanted something a little bit stronger than his usual Americano. So he asked the barman Fosco Scarselli to add into the drink a little bit of Gin rather than soda, in memory of his recent trips to London. This new cocktail became “The usual” for the Count but soon this became for everybody else the “American aperitif Count Negroni-style’. In the Fifties the cocktails became very popular in Italy and, soon, also all over the world.alo Ian Fleming cited the Negroni Cocktail in one of the episode of his famous saga James Bond.

With a deeply Eighties soul and rich in the typical flavors of the period, Espresso Martini was invented by English bartender Dick Bradsell. It seems that one day a famous and beloved model of the 80s showed up in her London club (some sources speak of Kate Moss, others are more certain that she is Naomi Campbell, but the identity of the protagonist has never been confirmed) in search of a real "jolt" of energy. The request was very precise: a cocktail that first woke her up, then overwhelmed her - for a crackling evening without yawning. So, without hesitation, Bradsell combined vodka, a cup of espresso coffee, sugar, a coffee liqueur and created one of the most beloved fresh and energizing must of modern mixology.

The origins of this cocktail go so far back that it's tough to trust anyone who says they created it. The original name was Whiskey Cocktail as it reflected the characteristics of the classic cocktail formula laid down in 1806; spirit, sugar, water and bitters The proliferation of new liqueurs available to bartenders from the 1870s resulted in a treadmill of new 'improved' Whiskey Cocktails... but which also led to a revolt amongst those who yearned for the original drink. Hence the Old Fashioned Whiskey Cocktail.

They say that after the shipwreck of the ship Main, one of the Marines reached a little village near Santiago de Cuba, called Daiquiri. There, he entered entered a sort of shack used as a bar to quench his thirst.Because he refused to drink plain rhum, they added lime juice and he complet the mix with a little bit of sugar. So Daiquiri was born. The cocktail was, together with Mojito, one of the favourite of the famous writer Ernest Hamingway who said “My Mojito a La Bodeguita, My daiquiri a La Floridita”

It is believed that the whiskey sour was created by the Englishman Elliott Stubb who, having landed in the port of Iquique (at the time belonging to the State of Peru) in the year 1872, opened a bar and experimenting with different aperitifs came to mix the native "limon de pica "with Whiskey and sugar, creating a perfect mix between the Anglo-Saxon style and the South American fruit. In fact, this cocktail is already mentioned in the famous book by Jerry Thomas of 1862 "How to Mix Drinks: The Bon-vivant's Companion", albeit with a slightly different recipe. Whiskey sour, despite having a steel soul, is an enveloping and seductive cocktail, with a precise and clear flavor, with the caramelized and smoky aromas of bourbon that are refreshed by the aromatic charge of lemon.

Iconically pink, the Cosmopolitan was born at the hands of Cheryl Cook, bartender and owner of The Strand in Miami. His words describe the birth of the drink better than anyone else: "It was about 1985; Martini was making a comeback, with its classic glass. The women didn't seem to like cocktails very much but liked to be seen with the martini glass in hand. This gave me the idea of creating a cocktail that would appeal to anyone and fit in this classic glass".So, I took the ingredients, Absolut Citron, a dose of triple sec, a drop of Rose's Lime and enough cranberry to make it deliciously pink. In a short time the cocktail was mentioned by the famous Cosmopolitan magazine, from which Cook took inspiration for the name.

Milano Torino is a controversial cocktail: no one really knows when it was created, but one of the most popular versions is that it was invented to celebrate the birth of the A4 motorway in 1932, although it is more likely that it was created with the advent of the great Italian school of mixing. At the beginning of the so-called "Short Century" there were few liqueurs available in the bars: the most famous were certainly the Vermouth of Turin and the Campari of Milan. Joining the two was then obtained the Milano Torino, prepared directly in the glass, with the addition of an orange zest.

The Sour is one of the oldest cocktails around. Probably it is the starting point of the mixology. Jerry Thomas was the first one to write it down. The original sour cocktail recipe is based on a simple equilibrium: a sweet part (usually sugar syrup), a more bitter part given by lime or lemon juice and of course a distillate that gives character to the mix.The most used spirits are usually rhum (Daiquiri), bourbon, vodka and gin. The name Gin Sour, which refers to the sour taste of lemon, is misleading. Actually, this cocktail is a perfectly balanced mix of the sugar sweetness, the lemon sour and the dry taste of gin.

Gimlet cocktail is composed by gin and lime juice. A 1928 quotes says “gin, a hint of lemon and soda”. Raymond Chandler in his 1953 novel  “ The Long Goodbye” described it by writing “a real gimlet is half gin and half lime juice and nothing else”. This statement is in line with the proportions suggested by the "Savoy Cocktail Book" of 1930.The origin of the name is confused: the most popular refers to the Surgeon Admiral Sir Thomas Gimlette who is said to have been the first to have added lime juice to the daily gin of his men of the Royal Navy to help them fight the damage of scurvy (disease due to vitamin C deficiency) during long ocean crossings.

Created in the early 1990s by Julio Bermejo, this cocktail takes its name from the family restaurant-bar in San Francisco, self-proclaimed "the best tequila bar on earth". Tommy's Margarita is now located in all the cocktail lists of the best bars in the world and, at the same time, the small family restaurant where this fabulous drink was born has become a mecca for bartenders and curious people who want to try to taste it, living an unforgettable experience. Compared to the classic Margarita, it enhances its flavor by replacing triple sec with agave syrup that is not by chance extracted from a fat plant in Mexico: the Agave Tequiliana Weber.
