    Iconically pink, the Cosmopolitan was born at the hands of Cheryl Cook, bartender and owner of The Strand in Miami. His words describe the birth of the drink better than anyone else: "It was about 1985; Martini was making a comeback, with its classic glass. The women didn't seem to like cocktails very much but liked to be seen with the martini glass in hand. This gave me the idea of ​​creating a cocktail that would appeal to anyone and fit in this classic glass".So, I took the ingredients, Absolut Citron, a dose of triple sec, a drop of Rose's Lime and enough cranberry to make it deliciously pink. In a short time the cocktail was mentioned by the famous Cosmopolitan magazine, from which Cook took inspiration for the name.

    Florence 1919 or 1920. At the time, Count Camillo Negroni was a regular at the aristocratic Caffè Casoni. One day he wanted something a little bit stronger than his usual Americano so he asked Fosco Scarselli, the barman, to add a dash of gin rather than soda to the drink, in honour of his recent trips to London. The new cocktail became ‘the usual’ for the Count and soon the ‘Count Negroni-style Americano aperitif’ for everybody else. In the 1950s, the cocktail became very popular in Italy and then worldwide with even Ian Fleming citing the Negroni Cocktail in one of the episodes of his famous James Bond saga.

    Le origini del cocktail risalgono alla fine del XIX secolo, al tempo della guerra tra Stati Uniti e Spagna: secondo alcune fonti dopo il naufragio della nave Main – nel porto dell’Avana – un marine giunse in un piccolo villaggio vicino a Santiago de Cuba, specificatamente a Daiquiri. Qui, per placare la sua sete, entrò in una sorta di baracca adibita a bar.

    Dopo aver rifiutato di bere rhum liscio, ottenne un’aggiunta di succo di lime che aggiustò con dello zucchero. Ecco come venne alla luce il Daiquiri, uno dei cocktail preferiti dello scrittore Ernest Hemingway insieme al Mojito: “Il mio Mojito a La Bodeguita, il mio Daiquiri a La Floridita”.

    La storia del Boulevardier inizia all’Harry’s Bar di Parigi dove lo storico barman Harry McElhone creò questo cocktail per Erskine Gwynne: sarebbe stato poi quest’ultimo a decretarne l’ingresso nei libri di storia grazie alla citazione all’interno di “Barflies and Cocktails” pubblicato nel 1927.

    La fama di Erskine derivava dal fatto di essere il nipote del magnate Alfred Vanderbilt e dall’aver fondato un mensile chiamato proprio “Boulevardier”: il nome, che deriva da boulevard (strada, in francese) fu coniato all’epoca per definire una persona “di strada” nel senso positivo del termine.

    Il Gimlet è un cocktail composto da gin e succo di lime. Una citazione del 1928 recita: “gin, una punta di limone e soda”. La descrizione del 1953 nel romanzo di Raymond Chandler “The Long Goodbye” stabiliva che “un vero gimlet è metà gin e metà succo di lime e niente altro”; questa affermazione è in linea con le proporzioni suggerite dal “Savoy Cocktail Book” del 1930.

    L’origine del nome è confusa: la più gettonata fa riferimento al Chirurgo Ammiraglio Sir Thomas Gimlette che si dice sia stato il primo ad aver aggiunto il succo di lime al quotidiano gin dei suoi uomini della Royal Navy per aiutarli a combattere i danni dello scorbuto (malattia dovuta a carenza di vitamina C) durante le lunghe traversate oceaniche.

    La categoria dei sour è una delle più antiche nella storia dei cocktail, anzi si può dire che rappresenti il punto di inizio per l’arte della miscelazione: il primo a codificarne la ricetta fu infatti il grande Jerry Thomas. I sour sono basati su un equilibrio molto semplice: una parte dolce (di solito lo sciroppo di zucchero), una parte più amara data dal succo di lime o di limone e ovviamente un distillato che dà il carattere al mix.

    Gli spirits più utilizzati in questo tipo di preparazione sono abitualmente il rhum (Daiquiri), il bourbon, la vodka e il gin. Il nome Gin Sour, che ovviamente rimanda alle note acide del limone, può essere fuorviante perché questo cocktail ha in realtà un equilibrio perfetto dato dall'unione tra il dolce dello zucchero, l'aspro del limone e il gusto secco del gin.

    Manhattan cocktail has been famous since the beginning.     With a deeply Eighties soul and rich in the typical flavors of the period, Espresso Martini was invented by English bartender Dick Bradsell.     Il Milano Torino è un cocktail controverso: nessuno sa realmente quando sia stato creato, ma una delle versioni più popolari è che sia stato inventato per celebrare la nascita dell’Autostrada A4 nel 1932, anche se è più probabile che fu creato con l’avvento della grande scuola italiana della miscelazione.

    All’inizio del cosiddetto “Secolo Breve” c’erano pochi liquori disponibili nei bar: i più celebri erano certamente il Vermouth di Torino e il Campari di Milano. Unendo i due si ottenne dunque il Milano Torino, preparato direttamente nel bicchiere, con l’aggiunta di una scorza d’arancia.

    Creato agli inizi degli anni '90 da Julio Bermejo, questo cocktail prende il nome del ristorante-bar di famiglia a San Francisco, autoproclamato "il miglior tequila bar sulla terra".     Si ritiene che il whisky sour sia stato creato dall'Inglese Elliott Stubb che, sbarcato nel porto di Iquique (al tempo appartenente allo Stato del Peru) nell'anno 1872, aprì un bar e sperimentando diversi aperitivi arrivò a miscelare l'autoctono "limon de pica" con Whisky e zucchero, creando un perfetto mix tra lo stile anglosassone e il frutto sudamericano.

    In realtà questo cocktail viene già citato nel famoso libro di Jerry Thomas del 1862 "How to Mix Drinks: The Bon-vivant's Companion", anche se con una ricetta leggermente diversa. Il whiskey sour, pur avendo un’anima d’acciaio, è un cocktail avvolgente e seducente, dal sapore preciso e netto, con i profumi caramellati e affumicati del bourbon che si ritrovano rinfrescati dalla carica aromatica del limone.
